Situated in the Kawama township on the outskirts of Kabwe in Zambia, Kawama is a poor community with many orphans & vulnerable children. The Silverwood Trust (UK charity No292372) supports the feeding of 120 children one nutritious meal a day in term time as well as supporting 320 children at junior school from this community. One of our church families is directly involved with this project and we are happy to support them.
Working globally to in the belief "that poverty can be ended is based on our understanding of scripture and the work of a creative, loving God". One of our wider church congregation works for Christian Aid, and our congregation regularly support in campaigns.
The Family Trust is an ecumenical schools based ministry whose mission is "helping children discover that christianity is relevant to their daily lives." They run assemblies, collective forms of worship, lessons, mentoring and prayer and safe spaces in primary and senior schools in Maidstone, Medway and Swale. Their Chief Executive grew up in our church and a number of us volunteer directly. The Family Trust also runs CAST for the Maidstone churches.
A great intiatitive sadly needed in a town like Maidstone, which every year aims to provide a hot meal, sleeping accommodation and some support to the homeless in the coldest months of the year. A number of our congregation have helped this project since its inception variously; cooking, setting up, manning the shelter s and washing linen etc.
Our Uganda relationship continues today largely through some 22 members of Holy Cross sponsoring children, primary at Kirima Primary School in Kanungu and seniors through Volunteer Uganda. The Uganda connection began in 1989 when Rev Hamlet Mbabazi came to Bearsted and support was given to help him through his further education. He has gone on to initiate many ways of improving the life of his local people including raising sponsorship for education, business initiatives and health improvements. Many people from Holy Cross Church have visited Uganda or sponsored projects over the years and a strong personal relationship persists.
Samara is a Sussex mum, who has masterminded the supply of emergency hospitals "Meditainers", clothing and essentials to refugees in Iraq and Syria. One of our congregation is deeply involved with this amazing work and as a congregation we support her through donating, collecting, sorting and delivering donated clothing and equipment, etc.
