Living by the Spirit...

Today we are thinking about freedom, but freedom to live God’s way, rather than our own; seeing how His Way leads to a good and fruitful life, which benefits not only ourselves but others – it is life giving, rather than destroying.

The Apostle Paul, in our Reading (Galatians 5:1, 13-25), reminds us that Christ has set us free by dying for all that makes for our separation from God, and therefore to live in the freedom and relationship which was intended for us from the beginning.  Life, and the ways of the world have made us think that the way of freedom is of a pushing others out of the way with ambition, anger and envy.  Uncaring and selfish.  There is a need for us to recognize ourselves and for a desire to walk the Way of Jesus, which means becoming more like Him every day.

We need help to do this and this help comes from the Holy Spirit; therefore, living by the Spirit every day; every moment of every day.  When the Holy Spirit controls our lives, He will produce in us love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  What a good testimony we would give if producing these ‘fruits of the Spirit’ in our lives, and in our churches.

The way to grow these gifts of the Spirit is to join our lives to Jesus Christ as ‘The Vine and the Branches’ in John 15 demonstrates.  We must know Jesus, love him, remember him, imitate him.  In other words, to live in perfect harmony with God.
