Mothers' Day or Mothering Sunday:
same or different?
The question of evil...
One of the most difficult questions to answer is ‘if God loves us why do bad things happen?’ The question of evil is difficult to answer and we are probably never going to be able to answer it fully in this life time. But if we engage with the problem we can learn to support one another through times of pain and suffering. In our reading from Ephesians we hear about God’s armour which is truth, faith and salvation through God’s word and Spirit.
By discussing evil and suffering we hope, at the very least, to help one another learn to live with unanswered questions, whilst retaining our faith in the goodness of God.
When trying to answer the big questions about God we start with the bible. The prophet Isaiah reveals the God who says ‘When you pass through waters and when you walk through the fire, I will be with you’. That does not begin to answer why God does not prevent or stop suffering, but it does give us an anchor to hold onto when we feel overwhelmed. God has promised us that in the uncertainty, the fear and the darkness we are not alone.
