Tongues are amazing things……all those taste buds, and they enable us to speak.  James (brother of Jesus and author if the New Testament book) confronts Christians with the use and misuse of what we say.  How easy it is to hurt and destroy people by our words, and we are exhorted to think about such things.  What you say, and what you don’t say, are both important.   Proper speech is not only saying the right words at the right time, but controlling the desire to say what you shouldn’t.  Examples of wrongly using the tongue include gossiping, putting others down, bragging, manipulating, false teaching, exaggerating, complaining, flattering, and lying.

God wants His people to be Christlike; whatever we say or do being encouraging and life giving.  A looking at Jesus and learning from Him; being helped by his Holy Spirit, but also a willingness to take note and to change.  Before speaking asking, “is it true, is it necessary, and is it kind?”  How affirming this is to our fellowship, and how good words can reach out to those attracted to the Christian life.
